Released in 2015, ‘Black Mass’, directed by Scott Cooper, and starring Johnny Depp as notorious Irish Mob boss James ‘Whitey’ Bulger. The film also stars Joel Edgerton, Rory Cochran, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemmons, Kevin Bacon, and Dakota Johnson. Reception was mixed to positive with praise going towards the cast, especially Depp who received almost widespread acclaim. Some critics compared it unfavorably to the mob classic, ‘Goodfellas’, while the real life Bulger and his associates disliked and disapproved the film and its portrayal of them and events.
James ‘Whitey’ Bulger, one of the most notorious and feared gangsters in history ran his Winter Hill Gang out of South Boston on the 1970s and ‘80s. During that time he made an ‘unholy alliance’ with childhood friend turned FBI agent John Connelly, as an informant. For years, Bulger and his gang were able to run their rackets, sell drugs, run out the Italian Mafia, and even commit murder during their reign of organized terror under the blind eye of the corrupt FBI agent.
This is the first of many gangster/true crime/mafia film reviews I’ll be doing, I’ve always loved this subgenre so I hope you enjoy this review and don’t mind the change in programming for a period.
