Director Tom Holland’s Fright Night is widely regarded as one of the best vampire movies ever made, if for nothing more than being a fun take on the classic monster. Released in 1985, the film took in $24 million at the box office against a budget of $7 million, and starred the likes of Chris Sarandon, William Ragsdale, Amanda Bearse, and the incomparable Roddy McDowall as Peter Vincent. Now, Mark Hamill is taking over for the late actor in the new episode of Table Read, which brings together most of the original cast, with the added addition of Rosario Dawson as well.

The latest episode of the Table Read podcast reunites the original cast of Fright Night for a special outing which has them reprising their original characters for a read-through of Tom Holland’s classic script. While it’s hard to imagine anyone else in the role of Peter Vincent, who was crucial to the film, Mark Hamill is ready to step into the part portrayed by the late Roddy McDowall, who passed away in 1998. Hamill says he’s “humbled” to step into the role, while also reminiscing about McDowall, who he once shared a dressing room with.

“I’m really looking forward to the episode, not only because of my love of Fright Night, but for the chance to play Peter Vincent & honor the legacy of the great Roddy MacDowall. I
shared a dressing room with Roddy while doing a TV movie
called Earth Angel & I’ll never forget his wit, charm & kindness, not to mention his memories of the Golden Age of Hollywood. I will treasure my experience with him forever & am
humbled to join the wonderful original cast
for this unique event.”

Tom Holland Calls the Fright Night Table Read “An Incredible Experience”

Written and directed by Tom Holland, Fright Night bit its way into theaters in 1985, receiving high praise from noted critics at the time, including Roger Ebert, who was known to be harsh on horror films. He gave the movie three out of four stars, remarking in his review “Fright Night is not a distinguished movie, but it has a lot of fun being undistinguished.” That fun has lifted Fright Night to cult-like status over the years, thanks in part to Holland, who has kept its legacy alive through comics, audiobooks, documentaries, and novels, while regularly engaging with fans on social media.

Holland, now 80-years-old, says that getting the chance to reunite his original cast for Table Read has been “an incredible experience.” He calls it more than just a reunion, but rather “a celebration of a beloved work.”

“Bringing the original Fright Night cast back together with some very special guests for a reading of the film’s script on the Table Read Podcast has been an incredible experience. For the first time, we’ve reunited the original cast of this iconic masterpiece, bringing friends and creators together to celebrate both the past and the future.”

“This is more than just a reunion—it’s a celebration of a beloved work enhanced by esteemed community members who elevate the experience even further.”
