Five years after the Spanish Civil War, in the summer of 1944, the early Francoist era, the story is set in Spain. The main heroine, Ofelia, interacts with a mystery faun monster in this legendary world that is intertwined with the real world by an overgrown, abandoned labyrinth. While Ofelia’s expectant mother gets worse and sicker, Ofelia’s stepfather, the Falangist Captain Vidal, hunts the Spanish Maquis who oppose the Francoist state. Ofelia encounters a number of unusual and supernatural beings that play major roles in her narrative and guide her as she navigates the difficulties of the ancient labyrinth garden.
